Dr. Khama Ennis, MD, MPH, FACEP, associate medical director of University Health Services’ Walk-In Clinic, and Tatishe Nteta, provost professor of political science and director of the UMass Poll, were recently honored at the Black Excellence on the Hill event at the Massachusetts State House.

The annual event, hosted Friday, Feb. 28 by the Massachusetts Black and Latino Caucus, commemorated Black leaders and trailblazers from across the commonwealth for their contributions to their communities.

Dr. Ennis, who is also the director of the 2023 film “Faces of Medicine,” a documentary project celebrating the paths of Black women physicians from Massachusetts and throughout the U.S., was nominated for recognition at the event by state Rep. Mindy Domb of the 3rd Hampshire District.

“It was an honor to nominate Khama Ennis for the @mablacklatinocaucus’ Black Excellence on the Hill Awards 2025 for the 3rd Hampshire District! Khama has served our community in so many ways,” Domb posted to Instagram. “She is a passionate physician, a visionary innovator, documentary filmmaker, and activist. She champions the role of physician diversity as we strive to reduce health disparities and improve outcomes for all.”

Prior to joining UHS in August 2024, Dr. Ennis served as chief and medical director of emergency medicine at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton. She earned her Medical Doctorate at New York University School of Medicine, her Master’s in Public Health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and her bachelor’s in Medical Anthropology at Brown University. She completed residencies at Mass General Hospital and Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Nteta was nominated for the recognition by state Rep. Lindsay Sabadosa of the 1st Hampshire District.

Nteta joined the UMass Poll as an associate director in 2010 and has been director since 2018. His academic research interests lie at the intersection of the politics of race and ethnicity, public opinion and political behavior, examining the impact of changing demographics and shifts in the sociopolitical incorporation of racial minorities on the contours of American race relations, campaigns, policy preferences and participation. He is cited regularly by regional, national and international media on numerous issues facing the American public and the findings of the poll.
