Richard Chu, Five College Professor of History, has been re-appointed to the Massachusetts Asian American and Pacific Islanders Commission for a second three-year term.

Chu, who was originally appointed to the statewide commission in 2022, was re-appointed in January by Treasurer and Receiver General Deborah B. Goldberg.

The commission is housed within the Treasury Department and is composed of 21 commissioners appointed by elected officials throughout the commonwealth. Established in 2006 as the Massachusetts Asian American Commission (AAC), its name was officially changed in 2021 to the Asian American and Pacific Islanders Commission in order to “more accurately capture and celebrate the rich tapestry of the AANHPI community.”

A permanent statewide body dedicated to advocating for Asian Americans, the commission’s goals include: celebrating the significant roles Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders play across various spheres of the Commonwealth, from the social and cultural to the economic and political; actively identifying and addressing the unique challenges faced by residents of Asian and Pacific Islander heritage; and fostering the growth and prosperity of the diverse AAPI community, ensuring a brighter future for every resident of Massachusetts.
