Office of Faculty Development Opens Applications for 2024-25 Scholarly Writing Fellows
The Office of Faculty Development (OFD) is now accepting applications from full-time UMass Amherst faculty members and librarians for a new cohort of Scholarly Writing Fellows (SWFs) for the 2024-25 academic year. Applications for the scholarly writing support program will be accepted through Friday, April 12.
During the fall and spring semester, those selected as Scholarly Writing Fellows partner with Rebecca Dingo, senior fellow and associate director of scholarly writing in the OFD, in working with faculty and librarians across campus to meet their writing goals in weekly scheduled Writing Accountability Circles(WAC).
Fellows provide guidance within their WAC by engaging in conversation and sharing writing tips, setting goals and planning meeting formats to accommodate the needs of the group. In addition to supporting their colleagues, fellows benefit from this dedicated time for their own scholarly writing and receive a stipend.
Prior to the first WAC, fellows will participate in one two-hour training session to become oriented to the process and principles and meet prior to the spring 2025 semester to check in and share approaches. Throughout the year, fellows receive guidance from Dingo to support the implementation of their WAC.
“SWFs are an integral part of OFD’s endeavor to support faculty at all stages of their research and writing projects. SWFs provide community, structure and time, and also enable informal mentoring structures to develop among their WACs participants over the course of the semester,” says Dingo, who is also a professor of English. “In fact, several SWFs continue working with their WAC groups long after the semester is over as a peer, celebrating when their group members complete their projects and encouraging everyone to always make space for their research and writing,”
