March 2 Media Update 3 p.m. from Town of Amherst, UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – The Town of Amherst, the Amherst Police Department and their regional law enforcement partners are reporting that the community is safe. Authorities report the number of gatherings and activity increased somewhat in the afternoon.

At UMass Amherst, 2,404 students attended the concert in the Mullins Center, where Future, the third act of Mullins Live, went on at 12:47 p.m. The concert concluded at 1:45 p.m. and the audience left the venue within about a half hour without incident.

For the day, Amherst Police report one arrest, for a liquor violation on Sunset Avenue. 

Police said they responded to three disturbances and two large gatherings through mid-afternoon.

Amherst Fire Department reports they have had four ambulance calls – one on campus and three off-campus. Three patients were later transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital for alcohol-related issues.

UMass EMS responded to four medical calls at the Mullins Center, two involving minor injuries and two alcohol-related. There were no ambulance transports from Mullins Center.

The objectives of the Town of Amherst, its police department and regional partners remain to ensure the safety of the community, safety of first responders and protection of private property. The Amherst Police Department is continuing to monitor events through the afternoon. Police report that foot traffic is heavy downtown, and shops and restaurants are open for business.
