The Hampden Gallery is opening two new exhibitions in September, with an opening reception Sunday, Sept. 8 from 1 to 3 p.m.

One of the exhibits, “Materialized,” showcases the work of 18 artists, who “make work that grows out of its material.” According to the Hampden Gallery, the artists “handle matter, color and form with great skill, each constructing a personal language that melds material, dimension and process with resonating forms that rupture our notion of space and how an artwork must function.”

The other exhibition, Suzan Shutan’s “Slicey Dicey,” was inspired by the artist's experience watching particles drift through light as a child. It features objects and paint, making use of light and shadow.

Both exhibits are curated by Suzan Shutan.

The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, 1 to 6 pm and on Sunday, 2 to 5 pm.

Free parking is available in lot 33 during the opening reception.
