Abelard Named Haitian-American Young Professional of the Year

Gabrielle Abelard, clinical assistant professor in the College of Nursing, was selected from among more than 100 nominees and 20 finalists as the 2019 Haitian American Young Professional of the Year by the Haitian American Chamber of Commerce/Haitian American Business Expo. The award was presented in March at the organization's gala and benefit dinner in Randolph, Massachusetts.  

The Haitian American Young Professional Awards were created to honor and recognize young professionals under the age of 45 who continually demonstrate outstanding leadership, exemplary professional accomplishments and commitment to their communities.

In accepting this prestigious award, Abelard emphasized the importance of addressing stigma and health disparities within and beyond the Haitian community. 

A clinical assistant professor at the UMass Amherst College of Nursing since 2014, Abelard has extensive experience in psychiatric mental health, integrative health, telehealth and team building. She earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from the College of Nursing before earning a doctor of nursing practice degree from Regis College.

Abelard is the founder and director of Abelard Psychotherapy Inc. in Stoughton, MA, a private practice serving over 2500 members across the lifespan providing psychotherapy and medication management.

She is also the newly appointed advisor to the College of Nursing African, Latino/a, Asian/Pacific Islander and Native American (ALANA) group, which she was co-founder of as a graduate student.
