MIE Research Seminar
Introduction to Electric Propulsion: Gridded Ion and Hall Effect Thrusters
Content
Abstract
This talk will be a comprehensive summary on electric propulsion systems and components, with focus on gridded ion engines and Hall effect thrusters. The content will cover fundamental EP physics and their practical applications. Students will also learn about EP design consideration, propellant selection, and common pitfalls to avoid.
Bio
Dr. Michael Tsay (2010, MIT Aero/Astro) is a leader in the EP community with over 20 years of experience. At Busek he oversees the development of the BIT-series gridded RF ion thrusters, including the world’s first flight proven iodine-fueled ion engine “BIT-3”. In addition to various R&D work, Dr. Tsay has served as the Program Manager for numerous flight programs at Busek. His work in the BHT-350 programs has directly contributed to the availability of “off-the-shelf” HET flight systems; a crucial need for the future growth of the satellite industry.
