About
Why UMass SPHHS?
Improving quality of life and achieving health equity are not just slogans – they lie at the heart of what we do at the UMass Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences. Whether we are combating a global pandemic or an opioid epidemic, working to prevent chronic disease or food insecurity, advocating for global health or the environment, or striving toward healthy aging, lifestyles, or reproductive health, our curriculum, outreach, practice, and research are always carried out with the goal of improving health outcomes for all.
As a graduate student in one of our master's or doctoral programs, you can turn your passion into activism and become an agent of change. Choose from one of our eight academic areas of study or our fully online degree and certificate programs covering all aspects of public health and health sciences. There is one designed just for you.

Great Value
As New England’s only publicly-funded school of public health, SPHHS provides great value compared to our private institution peers. In-state tuition & fees for full-time students is $17,383. Many graduate students receive full tuition waivers by working as Teaching or Research Assistants.

Small Class Sizes, Close-Knit Community
Our low student-to-faculty ratio offers students individual contact and hands-on training with leading scientific experts partnering with the CDC, NIH, and the WHO.

Research Opportunities Await
You’ll find a wealth of lab-based and community-engaged research opportunities through our research centers and institutes, including the Center for Community Health Equity Research, Center for Program Evaluation, Institute for Applied Life Sciences, and Institute for Global Health.

Community-Engaged Institution
The SPHHS has established enduring and dynamic community partnerships throughout the region. In 2022, the SPHHS was honored with the Harrison C. Spencer Award for Outstanding Community Service.

No GRE Required
Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores are not required and will not be considered or reviewed by our admissions committees.
