Graduate Admissions in Kinesiology

Admissions to MS and PhD programs in kinesiology.

The graduate application for all graduate programs is accessible online at the Graduate School website.

If you are applying to the Course-Based Masters program, please use the link above to apply to the Kinesiology Department and specify the Course-Based Masters in your personal statement.

When applying to the MS Thesis or PhD Kinesiology program, please choose an area of specialization:

  • Biomechanics
  • Movement neuroscience
  • Physical activity and health
  • Physiology

Students must also choose a faculty member you are interested in working with. Please clearly state the faculty member you would like to work with in your personal statement.

Note: All kinesiology graduate degree programs are STEM designated programs.

For the UMass kinesiology program, each faculty member accepts his/her own graduate students. This means that rather than applying to the program at large, students apply to study under a specific faculty member. The most effective way to gain acceptance is to target a specific lab and contact the director of that lab directly to determine if his/her interests match with yours and if there is an opening for a graduate student. Please be sure to also include the faculty member you would like to work with in your personal statement.

All applicants must meet the general requirements of the Graduate School at UMass Amherst. Admission decisions are based on a review of all application materials. TOEFL scores of 100 or higher, or the equivalent score on other accepted tests, must be submitted by international applicants who do not qualify for a waiver. Accepted MS students generally have undergraduate GPAs of at least 3.0. Full application information is available through the University of Massachusetts Amherst Graduate School.

NOTE: Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores are not required and will not be considered or reviewed by our admissions committee.
