Learning Resource Center for Engineers
At UMass Amherst’s Learning Resource Center (LRC)...
there are three different branches of academic support available to undergraduate students, including Course-Based Peer Tutoring (drop-in and by appointment), Study Skills Tutoring, and group review sessions or Supplemental Instruction (SI).
No application is needed for any of these tutoring resources, and they are free. Many do require you to make appointments through the NAVIGATE/ EAB SSC platform. There are also drop in hours and "day of" support requests may be made by contacting the LRC directly.
10th Floor, W.E.B. DuBois Library
Supplemental Instruction
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is informal, peer facilitated review sessions for a particular course. During SI sessions, students compare notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and predict test items. The SI leader is a student who has successfully completed the course. The student SI leader also sits in on course lectures for the current semester.
Check the LRC SI website for the latest information and schedule.
If you are interested in serving as a peer academic support leader, please let us know via this link.
Please double check the LRC website and/or with your instructor for days, times and locations of SI sessions.
Tutoring
Peer tutors have gone through training to help assist you with homework, assignments, and example problems from class. Peer tutoring at the LRC is one-on-one and is free but you need to book appointments. All LRC tutoring is located on the 10th floor of the Library. Tutoring is available for most Chemistry, Physics, and Math courses and for many Engineering, Biology and Computer Science courses. In addition, the LRC is offering drop-in tutoring for engineering, math, chemistry, physics, and other required courses on Friday afternoons.
Book a tutoring appointment via the NAVIGATE / EAB SSC platform, or through the link on the LRC front page.
If you are having trouble scheduling an appointment, call the LRC between 1pm and 10pm: 413-545-5334.
