4+1 Accelerated Masters Degree in Biomedical Engineering: Application Notes
Current UMass Amherst undergraduate students in engineering fields or related majors are welcome to apply during the fall of their senior year.
All interested students must submit an application in Slate. For more information on Slate, please see the How to Apply guide from the Graduate School.
UMass Amherst engineering students with a 3.5 GPA or higher are eligible for Fast Track Admission:
Fast Track Admission:
- No personal statement required (please write “I am a fast-track applicant” on Slate)
- No short essay required (please write “I am a fast-track applicant” on Slate)
- No letters of recommendation
- Waived application fee
- Updated transcripts required (unofficial accepted)
- Automatic admission to the MS 4+1 program
UMass Amherst applicants with <3.5 GPA, UMass Amherst applicants from non-engineering disciplines, and Smith College applicants qualify for Regular Admission:
Regular Admission:
- Personal statement required
- Short essay required
- 2 letters of recommendation required
- Updated transcripts required (unofficial accepted)
- Waived application fee (UMass Amherst applicants only)
Applications for Fall 2027 are due on January 15, 2027. We do not process Spring admission for the 4+1 Accelerated Masters program. We do not process applications submitted over 1 year in advance.
Students may apply or choose to defer their admission to the Accelerated Masters program within 1 year of graduating with their bachelors.
Students who wish to take summer classes or thesis credits may begin the Accelerated MS program the summer after their senior year. Please talk to the Academic Program Manager to approve this request and change start dates.
