BME Accelerated MS Professional Track Sample Curriculum

Accelerated 4+1 Master's Degree Professional Track Sample Curriculum

The BME Accelerated MS Professional Track is a course-based path for students who want to build advanced technical expertise in biomedical engineering pursue future industry roles. The professional track does not require a thesis. 

Students may select BME classes and non-major classes from the lists below to enrich their technical depth in diagnostics, device design, diagnostics, and other emerging BME research areas. 

Accelerated MS students in the Professional Track may also complete 6 credits of Independent Study (BME 596/696) with a faculty supervisor from BME or a related field. 

A minimum of 30 credits is required for the MS in Biomedical Engineering. 

  • At least 21 credits must be BME major courses
  • 12 credits must be 600-level and above
  • Up to 9 credits of approved non-major classes can count towards the degree
  • Up to 6 credits of Independent Study (BME 596/696) can be taken
  • Up to 12 credits from undergraduate can be transferred to the Accelerated Masters program. For more information, see the Transfer Credits guide[link]

  • Biosensing: Fundamentals & Applications (BME 514/614)
  • AI in Biomedicine (BME 515/615)
  • Intro to Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and Microrobots (BME 519/619)
  • Nature’s Materials (BME 575/675)
  • Orthopedic and Dental Biomaterials (BME 590STC)
  • Drugs and Pharmaceutical Engineering (BME 590STE)
  • Ultrasound Imaging (BME 590STF)
  • The Scientific Method in Biomedical Engineering Research (BME 650)
  • Medical Physiology & Anatomy (BME 651)
  • Independent Study (BME 596/696)
  • Masters Thesis (BME 699)

Students can use the Degree Planning Spreadsheet to plan which classes they will take to satisfy degree requirements. 

A potential sequence of courses for a BME Accelerated MS Professional Track student would be as follows: 

Transfer from undergraduate: 12 credits

Fall (1st semester): 3 BME major classes = 9 credits

Spring (2nd semester): 2 BME major classes, 1 nonmajor class= 9 credits

Total nonmajor course credits: 6 credits (within limit)

Total program credits: 30 credits, meets minimum requirement of 30 credits
