Scott Hertel and Mark Murdy are part of a team running LUX-ZEPLIN, the world’s most sensitive dark matter detector, which is located nearly a mile beneath the Black Hills of South Dakota.

The Department of Energy has awarded $1 million to UMass-led scientists to understand the differing fates of two different stands of Eastern hemlocks in Massachusetts.

The four programs and initiatives address critical steps and challenges that many students, especially those from underrepresented groups, may encounter during their journey from college entry to graduation and career readiness.

Gizzi, professor of English, received the Poetry Award for “Fierce Elegy,” while Maldonado, HFA director of marketing and communications, was bestowed the Middle Grade/Young Adult Literature Award for “The Fall of Whit Rivera.”
