SPHHS to Host Guest Lecture About Public Health’s Critical Role for Democracy on Sept. 26

The School of Public Health and Health Sciences will welcome Tim Leshan, chief external relations and advocacy officer for the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH), for a special talk titled “Public Health Is Critical for Democracy,” on Thursday, Sept. 26 from 1-2 p.m. in Life Sciences Laboratory S330/S340. The event is free and open to the public.
Leshan will discuss how public health is the backbone of democracy and provide insights about the pending election and the potential consequences for public health. Leshan will also describe several resources ASPPH has to offer its members including a new Messaging Guide, the Voting is Public Health campaign and ASPPH’s policy priorities. Attendees will be informed about how ASPPH is making an impact for academic public health, and how they can be equipped to play a role in advocacy.
ASPPH is a leading voice for academic public health, with members from around the U.S. and globally. Leshan leads the ASPPH’s public affairs and advocacy efforts with internal and external communications, advocacy for academic public health, global affairs and fundraising. He developed reports on gun violence prevention, the impact ASPPH members made during the COVID pandemic and achieving funding increases for key federal public health programs.
