UMass Amherst Launches Expanded Sustainability Website Reflecting Campus-Wide Commitment to the Common Good

As part of UMass Amherst’s long-standing commitment to protecting natural resources, advancing climate action and serving the common good, the university has relaunched its sustainability website to offer an expanded scope and deeper content. The updated site, found at umass.edu/sustainability and built by the web development team within University Relations, integrates content from sectors across campus to create a single, unified resource that reflects the full scale of the university’s sustainability efforts.
With input from stakeholders campus-wide, the redesigned site was built to provide a comprehensive overview of how sustainability is integrated into all aspects of university life –from operations and strategic planning to academics and student life. It serves as a centralized hub for information, inspiration and accountability, offering the UMass Amherst community a clear view of how collective action is building a more just and sustainable future.
“With the relaunch of this website, UMass Amherst affirms that sustainability is not an isolated initiative – it is a shared responsibility and a central value,” says Tilman Wolf, deputy chancellor for operational and organizational strategies and senior vice provost for academic affairs, who directed the project. “The site reflects the university’s holistic approach to environmental stewardship, outlining a path forward and inviting every member of the campus and the public to take part. It serves as both a call to action and a testament to what’s possible when a university leads with purpose – for the campus, the commonwealth and the common good.”
The navigation of the new site reflects the broad and inclusive vision of the university through five main channels:
- Our Commitment: This section outlines the university’s sustainability mission, history and guiding principles. It situates UMass Amherst’s efforts within its identity as a land-grant institution committed to the public good and traces its leadership in sustainability from early campus initiatives to current strategic goals.

This section highlights courses, majors and graduate programs that center sustainability, as well as the cutting-edge research that addresses issues like climate justice, renewable energy, sustainable food systems and environmental policy to showcase how UMass students are not just learning about the world, they’re shaping its future.
- Operations & Infrastructure: From energy systems and transportation to waste reduction and water conservation, this section details how the university is making its physical campus more sustainable. It also highlights investments in green building, renewable energy and long-term climate planning – ensuring that infrastructure supports institutional goals and resource stewardship.
