Environmental consciousness is part of UMass Amherst’s DNA.
Founded as an agricultural college in 1863, our campus has long been at the leading edge of sustainability development, education, and research. We recognize our responsibility as a leader in sustainability and are committed to driving environmental progress—on campus, across Massachusetts, and beyond—to sustain a resilient planet for generations to come.

Student Story: 'It's Existential': An Interview with Ishaan Singh Sarna
Ishaan Singh Sarna is an undergraduate at UMass Amherst. He is involved in sustainability within student government and also is helping faculty with sustainability-related research projects.
I’ve been involved in research since my freshman year. That doesn’t happen everywhere. My friends at other schools aren’t even allowed to be research assistants as undergrads. Here, everyone is welcoming of undergraduates.
