Campus Engagement Opportunities

Getting involved on campus is important for building skills in leadership, team work, cultural competency, and more. Start slowly—join a club or two. As students advance in their academic careers, more and more options (RA, TA, peer mentor, peer advisor, etc.) will become available. As such, students don’t need to do everything in their first year of school, they should just build a foundation that they can add to as they get comfortable balancing academics with other commitments.

  • Join a club, a pre-health student group or a health-related student organization. Pick something you like, not something you think will look good to an admissions committee.
  • Participate in intramural sports or a club sport.
  • Become a resident advisor or a peer mentor.
  • Become a peer advisor for your major (ask your major advisor) or for pre-health (read the Pre-Health Newsletter for announcements and apply in April).
  • Become a teaching assistant—talk to your professors.
  • Get involved in a center on campus:
    • Center for Multicultural Advancement and Student Success—intern, work, or volunteer. Sign up for their weekly bulletin.
    • The Stonewall Center (LGBTQIA+)—help with presenting and programming as an employee, intern, or volunteer.
    • The Center for Health Promotion—become a peer health educator.
    • Center for Women and Community—work, volunteer, or intern in positions like rape crisis counselor/advocate or community educator; work with the Women of Color Leadership Network.
    • Men and Masculinities Center—check their various opportunities for engagement.
    • Religious and Spiritual Life—become an Interfaith Community Service volunteer or join their dialogue.
    • Disability Services—work or volunteer to proctor exams, be a note taker, or serve a classroom access assistant.
    • Get involved in Residence Life—join a House Council, Student Senate, or the Residence Hall Association.
    • Participate in Civic Engagement & Service-Learning.
    • Become a tutor, SI, or ExSEL leader in the LRC—check their website periodically for job postings or call to find out when they will hire for fall 2023.
    • Help people find research positions by working in the Office of Undergraduate Research and Studies—check their website periodically for job postings or call to find out when they will hire for fall 2023.
    • Get a job on campus that is meaningful to you.
