We believe the best education doesn’t end in the classroom. Our students learn deeply through close interactions with our world-class faculty, research experiences in a variety of fields, and engagement in internships, co-ops, service-learning opportunities, student groups, and more.

“I was able to pursue 8 internships at 6 different companies across 4 separate states. From these opportunities, I was able to understand how individual systems interconnected and functioned under the vision of their owners, management, and overseeing leadership at companies of varying sizes and industries. I can confidently say that I would not be where I am today if it weren't for the first steps I took through the professional resources within the College of Engineering.”

Jabin Chen '23

During his time at UMass, Jabin Chen completed an incredible 8 internships, including experiences at Amazon, Tesla, Rivian, and Nanoramic Laboratories. After graduation, he moved to Seattle, WA, to join Blue Origin as a Manufacturing Engineer, where he works on building rockets.

Team working in France

A Capstone Experience

In the Senior Capstone Design experience, student teams address real-world challenges through industry-sponsored projects, bridging the gap between coursework and practical application. Last year, one of the student teams designed a floating offshore wind structure—then they brought it to France.

Aeronautics team

Beyond the Classroom

The UMass Aeronautics Team competes in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics: Design, Build, Fly International Competition. In 2024, the team finished first in New England. Students apply their classroom knowledge to real-world problems in the aviation, UAV, and VTOL industries.

Pradhyum Vikram '24

Pradhyum Vikram completed a summer internship at Newport News Shipbuilding, where he "learned a lot about what daily life as an engineer is like, including working with vendors and trades to make sure the engineering drawing and specifications are properly met."
