Novel Ultrasound Transducers for Minimally Invasive Imaging, Therapy, and Drug Delivery

Minimally invasive ultrasound devices are increasingly important for diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and cancers. In this talk, design, fabrication, and characterization of small aperture ultrasound transducers are presented for precision biomedical ultrasound imaging, therapy and drug delivery. In specific, we investigated high frequency transducers for advanced intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) imaging, and small aperture forward-looking and vortex ultrasound transducers for effective microbubbles and nanodroplets mediated intravenous sonothrombolysis. Moreover, miniaturized transducers enabled sonoporation was demonstrated to significantly enhance localized drug delivery. These new findings suggest that precision biomedical ultrasound via minimal invasion can be significant in advanced ultrasound imaging, therapy, and drug delivery for unprecedented disease diagnosis and treatment.
About Xiaoning Jiang: Dr. Xiaoning Jiang is the Dean F. Duncan Distinguished Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and a University Faculty Scholar at North Carolina State University. He also holds adjunct appointments as Professor of Biomedical Engineering at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and as Adjunct Professor of Neurology at Duke University. Dr. Jiang received his Ph.D. degree from Tsinghua University in 1997 and completed postdoctoral training at Nanyang Technological University (1996–1997) and The Pennsylvania State University (1997–2001). Prior to joining NC State in 2009, he served as Chief Scientist and Vice President of TRS Technologies, Inc. Dr. Jiang has authored or co-authored two books, six book chapters, more than 240 peer-reviewed journal articles, over 160 conference papers, and holds 12 issued U.S. patents. His research focuses on piezoelectric ultrasound transducers, ultrasound for medical imaging and therapy, ultrasound-mediated drug delivery, ultrasonic nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT/NDE), smart materials and structures, and micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS). He currently serves as Vice President for Publications of the IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC), Associate Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Nanotechnology Magazine, Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, and a member of the editorial boards of several other journals. He served as an IEEE Nanotechnology Council Distinguished Lecturer in 2018 and 2019. Dr. Jiang is a Fellow of ASME, SPIE, and IEEE.
