From designing technologies and systems that make society safer, greener, and more productive to turning data into knowledge that improves processes and mitigates risk in nearly every field, Industrial Engineering students do it all.
Industrial engineers (IEs) are systems thinkers who combine math, data science, engineering, economics, social science, and business methods to help organizations improve their products and services. As firms adopt new technology and capture ever-increasing data on all aspects of their operations, the need for IEs is growing rapidly.
At UMass Amherst, you can choose from a variety of electives—including health-care operations management, facility layout and design, network optimization, and game theory—to match your degree to your career path and interests. You'll go beyond the classroom for hands-on learning through close interactions with our world-class faculty; research experiences in a variety of fields; and engagement in internships, co-ops, clubs, service-learning opportunities, student groups and teams, and more. Upon graduation, you'll be able to contribute in sectors including business, aerospace, manufacturing, health care, and energy.

Accelerated opportunities
Engineering students who maintain a GPA of at least 3.5 are automatically accepted to the Accelerated MS program in their field. Up to 12 credit hours taken as an undergraduate to count toward our 30-hour MS degree, and up to 6 credit hours can be double counted to meet both BS and MS requirements.

Introduction to principles of human factors (ergonomics) and the necessity for considering the human aspect of design of tools, machines, and systems of people and machines; the literature and how to use it; and how to quantify data about people.
Quantitative techniques of production planning and control including master production scheduling, manufacturing resources planning, operation scheduling, materials management, just-in-time production, facility layout, and forecasting.
Modeling, analysis, and optimization of the logistics involved in production and delivery of goods and services. Topics include facility location, routing and transportation, inventory management, and supply-chain strategies.
