4+1 Accelerated Master’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering

Our 4+1 BS/MS Program

The 4+1 year BS/MS program in Manufacturing Engineering is open to all undergraduate students at UMass Amherst who are enrolled as majors in mechanical, industrial engineering, as well as students in related fields, such as other engineering disciplines.

The MS in Manufacturing Engineering degree is a 10-course (30-credit) program without a thesis requirement.

Coursework requires a minimum of four three-credit core courses and at least six three-credit electives for a total of 30 credits. Two of the six electives should be chosen to attain further specialization in a sub-field  (e.g., leadership and project management, materials, analytics, etc.); of the four remaining electives, students may take up to two practicum courses (related industry internship or an independent study) for six credits. 

It is expected that the 30 credits will be fulfilled in 12 months for those taking advantage of the 4+1 BS to MS non-thesis program for UMass Amherst engineering undergraduates .

Senior Capstone Project 2022

Fast Tracked Admission

Students with a minimum GPA of 3.5 based on at least 30 credits of engineering courses, or other courses required for the engineering degree, are offered fast-track admission. The cumulative GPA at the end of the third year, including all required 300-level MIE courses, is used.
