As the Commonwealth's flagship public research university, UMass Amherst is dedicated to educating the public, generating new knowledge, and applying discoveries to the betterment of society. As part of the UMass Amherst community, you'll have access to the more than 60 campus-based research centers and institutes covering a wide array of disciplines and specialties.
Motivated students can earn credit and satisfy some elective degree requirements by conducting independent study or thesis research with a supervising faculty member.
Alternatively, students can be paid to conduct research; for example, as part of a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates program at UMass or at another university.
MURALS
MURALS (Materials-focused Undergraduate Research Applied to the Life Sciences) is an NSF-funded REU site providing 10-week-long intensive research experiences for undergraduates. Chemical and Biomedical Engineering faculty offer projects at the interface of materials and the applied life sciences.
Rising Researcher Program
When undergraduates take on a research project, they develop a wide range of new skills—from research techniques and protocols to operating state-of-the-art equipment. In the process, they often learn more about themselves and what they are capable of.
RIDE REU
The Research for Inclusivity & Driving Equity (RIDE) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) provides an immersive and interdisciplinary experience in community engaged research focused on improving the transportation experience for underserved & underrepresented communities.
