4+1 Accelerated Master's Degree in Civil Engineering
Our 4+1 BS/MS Program
In this program, students can obtain a Bachelor of Science degree as well as a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering within a five-year time frame. The BS/MS degrees offered through this program are identical to the individual B.S. and M.S. degrees offered by the Civil Engineering Department. The combined five-year program enables students to obtain these degrees in less time than would be required when pursuing them independently, and can help students boost their salary when entering the workforce.
The 4+1 year BS/MS program in Civil Engineering is open to all undergraduate students at UMass Amherst who are enrolled as Civil Engineering majors. Application is made in the spring of junior year and admission is typically offered to students with GPAs in the top 33% of their class.

Fast tracked admission
Students who meet the GPA criterion will be invited to apply during the spring of junior year. The program allows students to transfer up to 12 credits of graduate level coursework (500 level and above) from their undergraduate years. The GRE exam requirement is waived for UMass Amherst CE students.
Specialize in a research area
Select courses to deepen your knowledge and concentrate in one of these Civil Engineering research areas: Transportation Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering and Mechanics, or Environmental Engineering.

Discussion of basic concepts in the analysis and design of bridges using American Association of Highway Transportation Officials specifications. Presentation of types of bridges, structural components, load distribution, and inspection techniques.
Dynamic behavior of soils with application to problems of seismic survey, measurement of dynamic soil properties, foundation vibration and performance under earthquake loading.
Fundamental principles of traffic flow and intersection traffic operations including traffic data collection methods, traffic control devices, traffic signal design, and analysis techniques.
