OFD Releases Results from COACHE Faculty Job Satisfaction Survey
The Office of Faculty Development (OFD) has released the first look at faculty job satisfaction results from the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) survey designed to guide strategic investments, programming and policy to improve faculty job satisfaction and retention.
On the OFD’s website, the campus community can review the 2024 summary report, an infographic one-pager, and a video from Angela de Oliveira, associate provost for faculty development, that offers a review of the initial results and how to read the report based on survey results conducted from February through April of this year.
Areas of strength for the university were departmental quality, adaptability and productivity in faculty governance, departmental leadership and tenure policies. Health and retirement benefits, divisional and faculty leadership, and personal and family policies were identified as areas of concern.
“The first look at these survey results highlights areas where we continue to achieve excellence as well as opportunities for continuous improvement,” said Fouad Abd-El-Khalick, provost and senior vice chancellor for academic affairs. “I look forward to collaborating with colleges, departments, and faculty as we further analyze these data to inform decision-making and the prioritization of our goals. I am eager to see how our response to these findings will enable us to continue to make UMass Amherst the best place for our faculty to work and thrive, as well as make their most significant and impactful contributions.”
Through the upcoming spring 2025 semester, the OFD will release thematic reports with focuses including teaching, mentorship, interdisciplinary work and collaboration, workplace policies and more.
“Our office is eager to share these insights and data with the UMass community in collaboration with the COACHE Steering Committee, the Office of Assessment, Survey and Effectiveness Research (ASER), and the Provost’s Office,” de Oliveira said. “We hope that faculty and faculty leaders will engage with the results and start conversations in their units to foster positive change.”
