Step-by-step guides detailing the McAfee removal and Sophos installation processes are now available on the UMass Amherst IT website.

As announced earlier this month, Sophos Intercept X Advanced and Sophos Home will replace McAfee endpoint protection as the preferred anti-virus solution on campus. The current university-provided McAfee endpoint protection software must be removed from computers by March 31, when the university's contract with McAfee expires.

  • In departments where dedicated information technology (IT) support is available, faculty and staff are encouraged to contact their IT support staff for more information on Sophos software.
  • For university-owned devices that are not managed by central IT or departmental IT staff, follow these instructions to download and install Sophos.
  • The Sophos package is available at no cost for personally-owned computers for students, faculty, and staff. Follow these instructions to access the Sophos home use portal at home.

IT professionals who manage and provide support for university-owned devices can join weekly Sophos migration meetings on Thursdays at 10 a.m. in 750 Du Bois Library.
