Install Sophos Endpoint Protection for Personally-Owned Computers

Note: Under a new university-wide contract, Sophos Intercept X Advanced with EDR and Sophos Home are replacing McAfee Endpoint Security at UMass Amherst. More information will follow.

These instructions are only for personally-owned computers only. Do not follow these instructions for university-owned computers, or computers that are managed by IT.

Register your free Sophos Home account

Important:

Use your email address ending in only "umass.edu" (e.g. "NetID@umass.edu," rather than "NetID@department.umass.edu"). The registration system currently does not work with other email address formats.

  1. Navigate to home.sophos.com/edu/umass in your web browser.
  2. In the UMass Email field, enter your UMass email address ending in only "umass.edu" (e.g. "NetID@umass.edu," rather than "NetID@department.umass.edu"), then click the Get Sophos Home button.

  3. Check your UMass email. You should recieve a message from Sophos, with the subject "Your free academic edition of Sophos Home." Open the message and click Create Account button. 
  4. Fill out the registration form, using your name and UMass email address.  Be sure to use the same email address you used in step 2 (e.g. "NetID@umass.edu," rather than "NetID@department.umass.edu").
    You will need to create a unique password (not your NetID password) to use for this Sophos account. Please follow our safe password tips. Once you have filled out the form, click Create Account.
  5. Check your UMass email for the account confirmation message, with the subject "Sophos Home Confirmation Email." Click the Confirm Email button. Sign in with your UMass email and the password that you created in step 4.


Install Sophos Home on Mac OS

Before you start

  1. Make sure your computer is connected to the internet
  2. Make sure you do not have McAfee endpoint protection installed.
    To remove McAfee endpoint protection, follow these instructions.
  1. Once you have registered for your free Sophos Home account using the steps above, navigate to home.sophos.com and Sign In via the link in the upper right. Once you are signed in, navigate to cloud.sophos.com/manage/home/dashboard.
  2. Under Protect this Mac, click the Download button.
  3. Once it has finished downloading, double click the downloaded file to extract the installer.
  4. Double click the Sophos Installer. You may be asked to enter your computer's administrator username and password.
  5. Once the installation is complete, you may be asked to click a button to open Security & Privacy to enable Sophos to run on your computer. Click the Open Security & Privacy button, and then click OK when prompted to allow Sophos to control System Preferences. Enter your computer's administrator username and password if prompted.


Install Sophos Home on Windows

Before you start

  1. Make sure your computer is connected to the internet

  1. Once you have registered for your free Sophos Home account using the steps above, navigate to home.sophos.com and Sign In via the link in the upper right. Once you are signed in, navigate to cloud.sophos.com/manage/home/dashboard.
  2. Under Protect this PC, click the Download button.
  3. Once the file has finished downloading, double click the downloaded file to extract and start the installer.
  4. Once the installer has started, click Install to begin the installation. Click Yes on the User Account Control dialog. You may be prompted for your computer's admin username and password.
  5. Once the installation is complete, click Finish.

 


 

Install Sophos Home on Linux

  1. Download Sophos Anti-Virus for linux from sophos.com/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-linux
