Install Sophos Endpoint Protection for Self-Managed University-Owned Computers

Note: Under a new university-wide contract, Sophos Intercept X Advanced with EDR is replacing McAfee Endpoint Security at UMass Amherst.

Windows

These instructions are only for self-managed, university-owned computers. Do not follow these instructions for personally-owned computers or computers that are managed by IT.

Before you start

  1. Make sure your computer is connected to the internet
  2. Make sure you do not have McAfee endpoint protection installed.
    To remove McAfee endpoint protection, follow these instructions.
  1. Download the Sophos installer for Windows.
  2. Double click the downloaded file to run the installer. It should be located in your Downloads folder, with the name Sophos_WinOS_withoutBitlocker.
  3. Click Yes on the User Account Control dialog. You may be prompted for your computer's admin username and password.
  4. The Sophos Endpoint Protection Installer will launch. Click the Install button.

  5. When the installation is complete, the installer will request that you restart your computer. Please save any unsaved work at that time before left-clicking on the Finish button.

Mac OS

These instructions are only for self-managed, university-owned computers. Do not follow these instructions for personally-owned computers or computers that are managed by IT.

Before you start

  1. Make sure your computer is connected to the internet
  2. Make sure you do not have McAfee endpoint protection installed.
    To remove McAfee endpoint protection, follow these instructions.
  1. Download the Sophos installer for Mac OS.
  2. Double-click the downloaded file.
  3. Open the resulting folder, Sophos_MacOS_without_FileVaultManagement.
  4. Double-click the Sophos Installer to open it and click Install.
  5. Enter your computer's administrator username and password to begin the installation process.

  6. Once the installation is complete, you may be asked to click a button to open Security & Privacy to enable Sophos to run on your computer. Click the Open Security & Privacy button, and then click OK when prompted to allow Sophos to control System Preferences. Enter your computer's administrator username and password if prompted.



Linux

These instructions are only for self-managed, university-owned computers. Do not follow these instructions for personally-owned computers or computers that are managed by IT.

  1. Download the Sophos installer for Linux.
  2. Run the downloaded file as root.
