This report, authored by Sarah Poissant, highlights the differences in satisfaction of women and men in the interrelated areas of tenure and promotion, promotion to full professor, and workload equity.

Areas where women are more satisfied than men include: (1) impressions of the quality of students, (2) availability of certain resources and supports across campus, and (3) the experiences and accomplishments of non-tenure-track faculty members. Women report lower satisfaction in three areas: (1) tenure and promotion to associate professor, (2) promotion to full professor, and (3) workload equity.

The first of these three special focus reports, authored by Christiane Healey, examined Perspectives of Non-Tenure Track Faculty at UMass Amherst and was published in June 2022. The third and final COACHE special focus report will examine differences in faculty job satisfaction by race and ethnicity and will be published in February 2023.

Faculty are invited to explore these findings on Gendered Experiences of Faculty at UMass Amherst as well as the COACHE spotlight reports that were previously shared. We also encourage you to discuss these findings in your departments, faculty governance committees, and colleges. We hope these data can inform faculty-led initiatives and decision-making.
