The MassNanoTech Institute is UMass Amherst's campus-wide initiative for nanoscale science and engineering. The campus has built a strong reputation for innovation in nanoscale research, spanning many departments. Over 50 faculty investigators from eight departments in three Colleges pursue projects in the field of nanotechnology.

UMass Amherst leads interdisciplinary research in nanoscale structures, particles, materials, devices, and systems. Nanotechnology research from UMass labs has implications in areas such as advanced computer memory, next-generation microelectronic device fabrication, nanoelectromechanical devices, ultra-selective and sensitive sensors, high-efficiency energy conversion devices, and drug delivery and tissue implants.
