The University of Massachusetts Transportation Center (UMTC), part of the UMass Amherst College of Engineering, conducts cutting-edge research on all aspects of transportation, including:

  • operations and management

  • traveler demand and behavior
  • sustainability
  • autonomous vehicles
  • freight
  • transit
  • intelligent transportation systems
  • transportation finance and policy
  • emission estimation and modeling
  • commercial motor vehicles
  • human factors
  • climate change
  • economic development

The Center also commands a strong outreach section by disseminating research findings, promoting important MassDOT initiatives, and addressing the broad range of municipal highway and public works departments state-wide. The UMTC is funded in part by agreements with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the New England Transportation Consortium, and other U.S. Department of Transportation and University Transportation Center consortiums.

The current focus of the Center's research, education, and training efforts encompasses major program activities including:
