Calendar Year Non-Tenure Track Faculty Compensation Policy
Purpose
The University permits faculty to be hired in either an academic-year or calendar-year capacity. The purpose of this document is to outline College expectations for instructional loads and compensation as it relates to calendar-year appointments such that departments can make appropriate decisions when appointing faculty into calendar-year positions.
Normal Teaching Expectations
With few exceptions, calendar-year non-tenure track (CY NTT) instructional faculty are normally expected to teach a minimum of six (6) courses in a given academic year, spanning 9/1/XX through 8/31/YY (see Departmental Faculty Workload Plans for more details). These courses may be taught in any term (Fall, Winter, Spring, or Summer), and no additional compensation will be granted for teaching their assigned teaching load, regardless of the term of instruction.
If negotiated with the Department Head, CY NTT faculty may receive course reductions for increased service loads, administrative responsibilities, etc.
Over-Load Instruction
For the purposes of CY NTT instruction, “over-load” is defined as any course beyond the assigned teaching load that is taught in a given academic year. CY NTT faculty are eligible to teach additional courses as over-load for additional compensation during the fall and spring semesters, depending on need, availability of funding, and with prior approval from the Department Head. Similarly, CY NTT faculty are eligible to teach University+ courses as over-load through Flexible Education in the summer and winter terms, with compensation governed by the referenced University+ Course and Compensation Administration Policy.
Limitations
- If CY NTT faculty teach University+ courses in Summer or Winter terms as part of their normal load, they CANNOT receive compensation through the University+ compensation schedule.
- CY NTT faculty may NOT receive additional compensation above their CY salary for conducting research. Instead, they may buy out of their courses for research per the Course Buyout Policy with prior approval of the Department Head.
- All bargaining unit faculty are subject to any provisions outlined in the MSP Collective Bargaining Agreement and their faculty appointment letter as it relates to additional compensation limitations.
- At the time of position opening, Department Heads should determine whether a hire should be academic-year (AY) or calendar-year (CY). For positions that are decided and searched as AY, Department Heads may not change the appointment type to CY based on negotiations with possible hire candidates. In such cases, the search must be closed and re-opened as a CY faculty search.
