Declare a Major in Engineering

Instructions on entering or changing an Engineering major

Change of Major into Engineering – for students who entered UMass in Fall 2026 or after

Requirements for students to transfer into the Riccio College of Engineering:

  • Students need to qualify to transfer into the Riccio College of Engineering by the end of their fourth semester at UMass.  If needed, fourth semester grades are considered.
  • Cumulative AND most recent semester (Fall or Spring, not Winter or Summer) GPA of 2.7 or better
  • “C” or better in Math 131 AND Chem 111 or Physics 151 (or higher level Math, Chem, or Physics course, as appropriate)
    • These courses are required to be taken at UMass Amherst; if transfer credit for this exists, please consult with an Engineering advisor to determine appropriate substitution
  • “C” or better in the following if taken BEFORE transfer into the Riccio College of Engineering
    • Any engineering major course
    • Any subsequent Math, Chem, and/or Physics courses
  • “C” or better in ENGLWRIT 112 or transfer credit for College Writing requirement
  • Any retake of classes listed above will require a special petition to the Riccio College of Engineering and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.  Details on the petition process will be coming soon.
  • Pass/Fail is not acceptable in these required courses.  No pass/fail courses can be applied to any engineering graduation requirements.
  • Students must fill out the Change of Major form in order to be switched into an engineering major and be assigned an engineering advisor.  The Change of Major form can be accessed here. Change of major form submissions are only processed during the winter and summer sessions:
    • Winter submission deadline: January 15th
    • Summer submission deadline: June 15th

Change of Major into Engineering – for students who entered UMass in Spring 2026 or before

Requirements for students to transfer into the Riccio College of Engineering:

  • A cumulative GPA of a 2.0 or better
  • A most recent semester (Fall or Spring, not Winter or Summer) GPA of a 2.0 or better
  • C or better in Math 131, ENGLWRIT 112, and either Chem 111 or Physics 151 (AP credit or transfer credit can be used for ENGLWRIT 112, Chem 111, and/or Physics 151; if AP credit or transfer credit exists for Math 131, then a C or better is required for Math 132)
  • Pass/Fail cannot be used for any of the above courses
  • Students must apply and be admitted to the Riccio College of Engineering no later than their fourth semester at UMass.  Please note that they should be taking Engineering courses BEFORE this to stay on track to graduate within four or five years.  They should also be consulting with an engineering advisor regularly about their progress.
  • Change of Major Request Form
CURRENT Engineering majors looking to switch into a different Engineering major:
  • Students MUST consult with an advisor in their new intended Engineering major before making the switch
  • Students MUST fill out this Change of Track form to be officially switched into their new major and to a new advisor
PR-ENGIN policy – ONLY for students who entered UMass in Fall 2021 or before
