UMass Amherst Information Technology Enterprise Desktop Support (EDS) provides the following services to current faculty and staff of the College of Engineering. For more information about IT services go to IT Services & Support Portal.

Equipment procurement

Hardware support

  • EDS team will tag, deliver, and support university owned workstations and laptops prepared with IT imaging process.
  • Supported hardware includes Apple, Dell and Lenovo systems.
  • EDS reserves the right to decline service for outdated and end-of-life systems that no longer meet minimum requirements for supported operating system and foundational controls.

Printers and scanners

  • EDS offers limited support for printers and scanners connected to UMass IT network, for use by the department, either printing directly from a supported system to a device or through a print server connection.
  • Print device hardware support includes software installation, configuration and driver updates.
  • Toshiba support includes services based on the UMass contract.

Mobile devices

EDS provides limited support for Android and iOS mobile devices including email client set up with UMass Amherst email account and wireless network connection.

Operating Systems

Windows 10 (end of life October 2025) and Windows 11, macOS latest version, and Linux (very limited).

Software

EDS will provide support for standardized software including:

  • Microsoft 365 apps including Outlook and Teams.
  • Endpoint protection software (encryption, antivirus, and software patch deployment)
  • Edge (Microsoft) and Safari (macOS) browsers
  • GlobalProtect (VPN client)
  • Zoom
  • Foxit PDF Editor

EDS will install third party software to their best ability but will not be held responsible for their functionality. Software installers and proof of license is required for installation.

Data migration for new devices

EDS techs will back up documents, desktop settings, web browser favorites or bookmarks, and email (calendars and contacts). All personal data such as photos and music stored on a university owned device will not be transferred.

Endpoint management

EDS configures university computers with a baseline configuration and software tools to help mitigate risk to university data and systems, and to help effectively manage a large number of computers.

Services not provided

  • Maintenance of non-supported operating systems and applications, including all vendor supplied security and bug fix patches are the responsibility of the user.
  • Movement of heavy or large amounts of computer equipment.
  • Home visits or work on computers that are purchased with non-UMass funding.

Internet and LAN Connectivity

If you need remote access to your computer on the UMass network from outside the College of Engineering, please submit a support request.

Computer labs

EDS classrooms team maintains computers in the classrooms and labs. These systems come with a standard set of software packages, along with any specialized software requested by faculty members for class and assignment purposes. For more details on specialized software, please consult your instructor or departmental contact. Printing services are available in some locations.

  • Goessmann Lab, room – 16 systems
  • Marcus Hall Grad Hub – 8 systems
  • Marston Hall, room 12 – 9 systems
  • Marston Hall, room 23 – 16 systems

Printing

  • Student Quota: $5 per semester (100 black and white pages), resets each semester and summer.
  • Printing Costs: $0.10 per black and white page, $0.50 per color page.
