Sam the Minuteman

For half a century Sam the Minuteman has represented the pride and spirit of the UMass Amherst campus and athletics programs. A local and regional favorite, Sam gained national recognition thanks to his appearances in a number of ESPN’s famous “This is SportsCenter” commercials and has represented UMass on NBC’s “Today” show and “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

Not only can you find Sam cheering on the Minutewomen and Minutemen at many UMass Athletics contests, you’ll often find him on campus and in the local community for various events, functions and sometimes just saying “Hi” and spreading the university’s “Revolutionary” spirit!

In conjunction with UMass Athletics, University Relations coordinates Sam’s activities and appearances.

Be Part of Sam’s Team!

UMass Athletics and University Relations co-manage Sam both in the “real-world” and on social media, and are always looking for energetic students to join their team as performers, handlers and digital collaborators. Interested students can email Sam@umass.edu to schedule a meeting with the mascot managers – no previous experience is required, although it’s always welcomed!
