UMass ADVANCE Opens Registration for Second Online Workshop on ‘Equity Minded Workload Reform’

UMass ADVANCE has announced that “Equity Minded Workload Reform, Part 2: Policies,” the second workshop in a project promoting workload equity and reform within faculty work environments, will be held on Friday, Feb. 9, from 10 a.m.- noon via Zoom.
The workshop host, Joya Misra, provost professor and Roy J. Zuckerberg Endowed Leadership Chair in the Department of Sociology and School of Public Policy, will focus on organizational policies and practices that can be adopted to proactively design more equitable workloads and reward systems.

Some faculty members report feeling that workload in their department is unfairly distributed and that women and faculty of color may be asked to carry out more than their share of work. This session provides clear, evidence-based practices to create better, fairer workloads for faculty through changing the “choice architecture” for the division of labor in departments.
Misra, who is also a UMass ADVANCE co-PI and president of the American Sociological Association, will discuss a variety of approaches to workload equity such as rotating time-intensive roles, reducing and restructuring committees, creating policies for service and teaching assignments, using benchmarks by rank, or developing crediting systems that can help departments create fairer workload for all faculty.
The first workshop, “Equity Minded Workload Reform, Part 1: Assessing Workload Challenges,” is available to view on the ADVANCE in Video web page.
Registration is currently open on the ADVANCE Program registration form. For more information, visit the ADVANCE Program website or email advanceprogram@umass.edu.
