In an ongoing collaborative effort to support diversity, equity and inclusion in faculty recruitment and retention, the Office of the Provost’s UMass Faculty Diversity unit has launched a new two-hour training program this month to promote best strategies and practices in evaluation and promotion processes.

The Strategies and Tactics for Retention through Inclusive Promotion Evaluation (STRIPE) training program was created in collaboration with UMass ADVANCE and in consultation with the Office of Faculty Development and the Academic Personnel Office for members of college/school and department personnel committees. The new initiative, which builds upon the effective STRIDE faculty recruitment trainings, is an optional two-hour training workshop intended to address the particular challenges of the faculty evaluation and promotion process, with the goal of developing strategies to increase awareness of – and strategically counteract – unconscious bias.

STRIPE will focus on strategies and best practices to minimize inequities, support inclusion and inclusivity in faculty promotion and tenure cases, setting the stage for greater retention of faculty, especially women and faculty from groups historically underrepresented in the academy.

Like the STRIDE program, STRIPE is valid for a three-year period, after which it must be renewed. To register for October workshops and for more information, visit the Office of the Provost, STRIPE Training Program webpage.
