UMass ADVANCE, in collaboration with the Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) and the Office of the Provost, will host the Annual Distinguished Lecture and Awards Reception on Monday, March 10, from 4-6 p.m., in the Marriott Center located on the 11th floor of the Campus Center.

This year’s event will welcome keynote speaker Suzanne Rivera, president of Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and professor of public affairs, whose lecture is titled “Higher Education is a Hope Machine.”

Rivera is a nationally recognized leader in higher education with nearly 30 years of experience. A scholar of science policy and research ethics, she co-edited the book “Specimen Science” (MIT Press, 2017) and has published extensively on the moral dimensions of science, including informed consent for research, use of human specimens and protection of research subject privacy. Her work is supported by NIH, NSF and other prominent organizations.

Passionate about equity and inclusion, Rivera champions the value of higher education, expanding college access, and fostering democracy. She serves on national boards, including the American Association of Colleges and Universities, and is an active leader in civic and professional organizations in Minnesota.

During this event, ADVANCE will also honor campus leaders in building inclusive excellence with the presentation of the ADVANCE Awards for Faculty Peer Mentoring and Equitable Practices in Collaboration (EPiC).

Registration is required to attend the event via the UMass ADVANCE Program registration form. The deadline for registration is Friday, Feb. 28. Light refreshments will be served.
