Study Abroad: The Student Perspective

At UMass Amherst, students are supported in finding opportunities to explore the world that are tailored to their interests or field of study. At UMass Amherst, known for our excellence—both in the classroom and beyond—we're dedicated to providing a world-class, accessible education to our students. There are many ways students enhance their college experiences beyond the classroom at UMass: through internships, registered student organizations, student government, and more. One of the most transformative and memorable experiences a student can have is to participate in an international learning opportunity through a study abroad program.

According to U.S. News & World Report, study abroad benefits students in three outstanding ways: "First, study abroad provides exposure to different systems of governance, education, and health care, which may offer a broader understanding of the world. Second, study abroad opportunities are often structured around developing foreign language skills; the immersive nature of an international experience allows students the opportunity to use another tongue every day among native speakers. Finally, experts suggest that the international experience could provide a career boost to study abroad alumni by signaling greater global awareness to employers."

The UMass Amherst International Programs Office (IPO) advises students, helps them choose from hundreds of study abroad programs in 56 countries based on their interests, field of study, and locations they'd like to visit, and works with them through the application process—every step of the way.

Working with IPO, students Haley Kaye '24 and James Kirk '24 matched with programs that aligned with their interests, enhanced their studies, and provided invaluable life experiences. Read their stories at the links below.
