Historically, engineering has been a profession whose functions and roles serve society. They are the mediators and catalysts for innovation and shape the future of society. However, while many students start in this field, retention drops off over time leaving a handful to become a lifelong engineer. This seminar will explore how historically engineering has evolved with society, the role that they play in the profession, and what the future holds for them. We will discuss how considerations based on structures, motivations, and perspectives shapes the external and internal views of the profession as well as an individual professional identity. The seminar will conclude with translatable recommendations for ensuring lifelong engineering educators in the United States.

Dr. Villanueva Alarcón joins us as part of the Distinguished Scientist and Engineer Seminar Series
