“Polymer Science and Engineering at Scale: Materials, Products, and Processes”
Abstract:
I will draw on more than 35 years of experience in industrial polymer science, engineering design, computational materials modeling, and product commercialization to illustrate how fundamental principles of polymer science and engineering translate into impactful materials, products, and manufacturing processes at scale. Using examples from my own work, I will discuss the development and commercialization of technologies spanning pavement markings, mechanical fasteners, windshield sealants, window films, and connected safety solutions.
The talk will highlight how structure–process-property relationships, process understanding, and manufacturability influence product performance and successful scale-up. I will also discuss strategies used to protect and deploy innovation, including the effective use of patents, and trade secrets, illustrated through selected examples from my portfolio of more than 28 issued patents.
I will share perspectives on building cross-functional, high-performance teams and on transitioning new technologies from research to the marketplace. I will conclude with reflections on career pathways in industry and the importance of continued advocacy for STEM education and engineering careers.
