Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) students at UMass Amherst are designing and programming everything from complex software systems to autonomous vehicles, and playing a hands-on role in the future of technology in communication, health care, smart cities, and more.

We believe the best education doesn’t end in the classroom. Our students learn deeply through close interactions with our world-class faculty, research experiences in a variety of fields, and engagement in internships, co-ops, service-learning opportunities, student groups, and more.

“UMass Amherst is filled with opportunities to grow and learn as a student and an individual. The College of Engineering is a strong community, both on campus and through the active alumni network, where there is a place for each and every student who wishes to be a part of it. Jessica Durkee '24

During her time at UMass, electrical engineering major Jessica Durkee worked on an NSF-funded project under Professor Dennis Goeckel studying the effect of RF Fingerprinting on covert communications. After graduation, she began working on airborne radar systems at MIT Lincoln Laboratories.
“A large part of my life at UMass was Engineers Without Borders. From picking up trash and doing yard work, to traveling to Kenya, I firmly believe it is an experience that not many people have, and UMass gave that to me. It really did make me into a global citizen.”

Siddhanth Ghosh '23

In addition to Engineers Without Borders, computer engineering major Siddhanth Ghosh conducted research in the Water & Energy Technology Center, the Peltier Aerosol Lab, and the SMELT Lab at UMass. He also did an internship with Dell Technologies, where began working full-time after graduation.

Tergel Molom-Ochir '23

Tergel Molom-Ochir was named a Rising Researcher for his work in Professor Prashant Shenoy’s Laboratory for Advanced Software (LASS), where he studied mobile edge computing in order to design energy-efficient systems with improved performance and lower operating costs.

Beyond the Classroom

HackUMass, a 36-hour student run hackathon; M5, a makerspace for collaborative projects; and UMass CubeSat, a team focused on conceiving and developing small satellites used in remote sensing, are just a few of the exciting initiatives open to ECE majors.

A Capstone Experience

The Senior Design Project provides a capstone experience for ECE undergraduates. Students work in teams of 3-4 in this year long course sequence to design and prototype a system of their choice, marking the transition from coursework to practice.
