Aaryan Chaudhary

As president of the UMass MedTech Team, Aaryan Chaudhary has designed and prototyped innovative medical devices with real-world applications to help people in need: “Your 'why' is more important than your 'how'. You may not immediately know how to solve a problem, but if your heart is in the right place, then you will be part of the solution.”

My Life as a Biomedical Engineering Major
“I never thought I would do engineering in college, but the number of different concentrations one could pursue and the merging of different fields drew me in. I was intrigued by the research being done, and I saw a way to merge my passions for medicine, chemistry, biology, and innovation in one major.”

Sophia Millan '24

As a freshman, Sophia joined professor Cathal Kearney’s lab to help study the role of circadian rhythms in bone regeneration. As a senior, she was named a UMass Amherst Rising Researcher, an award that recognizes the exceptional accomplishments of undergraduate students who excel in research.

“During my freshman year I joined Professor Yubing Sun's Laboratory for Multiscale Bioengineering and Mechanobiology, and have conducted research with implications for improving understanding of wound healing, cancer metastasis, and human brain development and patterning. Joining Prof. Sun's Lab has undoubtedly been one of the most impactful experiences I have had in my undergraduate career. Participating in on-campus research has strengthened my undergraduate curriculum and prepared me for grad school.”

Lauren Brown '23

After graduating with her BS in Biomedical Engineering from UMass Amherst, Lauren Brown received a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Award to attend the University of Pennsylvania's Bioengineering PhD program and continue her research.

“My favorite class has been senior design—I have enjoyed applying the engineering theory I have learned over the past four years of classes to develop a tangible product, based on a real client's need. I spent the year working with a team of five other BME seniors to collaboratively design, prototype, manufacture, and test a mechanical surgical assistive device for research use at the Department of Neurological Surgery at UMass Chan Medical School.”

Jack Muse '24

Jack Muse conducted research in the Bailey Lab, where he completed a thesis project studying prostate cancer cell line influence on osteoclasts and bone resorption in bone metastasis. He also completed a summer internship at the University of Hamburg's Center for Hybrid Nanostructures, in Germany.

“I have felt supported by the UMass Amherst Biomedical Engineering Department from the moment I stepped on campus. My curriculum was based on learning practical skills that can be applied in the biomedical engineering industry. I find it interesting there are so many different fields to go into within biomedical engineering, like prosthetics, medical devices, and biomaterials.”

Julia Burke '23

After graduating with her BS in Biomedical Engineering from UMass Amherst, Julia Burke received a Fulbright grant to support her research as a PhD candidate in Biomedical Engineering at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, in Dublin.
