4+1 Accelerated Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering
In this accelerated program, students complete a Bachelor of Science degree as well as a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Environmental Engineering within a five-year time frame. The BS/MS degrees are identical to the individual BS and MS degrees offered by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. This combined five-year program enables students to obtain these degrees in less time than would be required when pursuing them independently, and can help students boost their salary when entering the workforce.
The 4+1 year BS/MS program in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Environmental Engineering is open to all undergraduate students at UMass Amherst who are enrolled as civil engineering majors. Application is made in the spring of junior year and admission is typically offered to students with GPAs in the top 33 percent of their class.

Fast tracked admission
Students who meet the GPA criterion are invited to apply during the spring of junior year. The program allows students to transfer up to 12 credits of graduate level coursework (500 level and above) from their undergraduate years. The GRE exam requirement is waived for UMass Amherst CE students.
Innovative research centers
Master's students have access to two research centers, the Northeast Climate Adaptation Science Center and Water Innovation Network for Sustainable Small Systems, that are hosted by UMass Amherst.
Featured classes
Policies and laws relating to use and conservation of water resources. Analysis of water-related governmental organizations and programs at federal, state, and local levels.
Facilities for the passage and protection of aquatic organisms at hydropower projects and other stream barriers. Topics include ichthyomechanics, ecohydrology, and design of baffled chute passes, pool-type ladders, fish lifts, and downstream devices.
Rates and kinetics of chemical and biological systems of importance to environmental engineers. The fundamentals of kinetic theory, mathematical simulation of kinetic systems, analysis of kinetic data and many relevant case studies are examined.
