About
The Water Systems Lab, led by Dr. Emily Kumpel in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, is a research group studying water infrastructure, systems, service delivery, and communities across diverse urban and rural contexts. Our work connects technical measurements of water quality and supply reliability to public health, regulatory practices, and policies. A central focus is intermittent water supply - how unpredictability in when water arrives shapes household behavior, water quality, and health outcomes - studied through field work, lab experiments, and modeling across global settings. In the United States, we partner directly with state agencies on technical assistance. Visit our website at watersystemslab.github.io/watersystemslab to learn more.
