ABET Accreditation: Electrical Engineering
Accreditation
The Bachelor of Science degree program in Electrical Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.
Program Mission Statement
We are committed to excellence in teaching and education, preparing our students for productive careers and meeting our unique responsibilities as part of the Commonwealth’s flagship public university.
Program Educational Objectives
The program educational objectives of the Electrical Engineering program are to develop electrical engineers who can:
- Practice electrical and computer engineering in functions such as product design, field engineering, applications engineering, quality control, research and development, or technical marketing.
- Contribute in technical subfields such as integrated circuit design, computer networks, software engineering, embedded systems, digital signal processing, communication systems, microelectronics and optoelectronics, semiconductors, microwave systems, and control systems.
- Be employable by the broad range of engineering organizations that comprise the national and Massachusetts electronics and information technology industries, including multinational corporations, small-to-medium-sized corporations, research labs, start-up companies and entrepreneurial ventures.
- Continuously learn through on-the-job training, self-study, workshops, non-degree courses, or advanced courses and degrees.
- Further develop professional attributes such as enhanced communication skills, participation in professional society activities, and ethical practice of engineering.
- Function as contributing members of the broader society with awareness of the social and economic implications of engineering practice.
- For those having the ability and interest to do so: build on the foundation of their undergraduate education to develop the skills needed to assume leadership roles such as launching a new business or joining in a start-up venture; moving into a management position, completing the MBA degree, etc.; or conducting research, completing the MS and PhD degrees, and pursuing an academic career.
Student Outcomes
Graduates awarded the BS degree in Electrical Engineering shall:
- Be able to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
- Be able to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
- Be able to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
- Be able to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
- Be able to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
- Be able to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
- Be able to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
