Visiting Writers Series Hosts André Alexis and Mona Awad
As part of their Visiting Writers Series, the MFA for Poets and Writers program will present readings by André Alexis and Mona Awad on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. in Old Chapel. The free, public event will be followed by a book signing and refreshments.
Celebrating its fifty-sixth year, the Visiting Writers Series presents emerging and established writers of poetry, fiction and nonfiction.
André Alexis was born in Trinidad and grew up in Canada. His latest novel, “Days by Moonlight,” was long listed for the 2019 Scotiabank Giller Prize. His novel “Fifteen Dogs” won the 2015 Scotiabank Giller Prize and the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize. His other books include “Childhood,” “Pastoral,” “Asylum” and “Despair and Other Stories of Ottawa and Lambton.”
Mona Awad's debut novel, “13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl,” won the Amazon Best First Novel Award, the Colorado Book Award and was shortlisted for the Giller Prize and the Arab American Book Award. Her new novel, “Bunny,” was released June 11. Her writing has appeared in “McSweeney’s,” “TIME,” “VICE,” and elsewhere. She has been an instructor in the literary arts department at Brown University and in the English department at the University of Denver.
