Lehmberg edited the book with fellow music education researcher C. Victor Fung from University of South Florida; she also contributed a chapter (“Participatory Music Making and Quality of Life of Older Adults”) and co-authored two additional chapters as well as the introduction and interludes between each of the book’s ten studies. Fellow UMass faculty member Stephen Paparo also contributed a chapter, one that analyzes the meaning of participation in Eric Whitacre’s Virtual Choirs.

According to the publisher’s description, the book uses “multiple methodologies and perspectives to consider the social, cultural, and psychological meanings of lifelong music participation… the contributors combine personal voices and vivid narratives with scholarship to present many potential meanings of music participation, and lay out research-based implications for lifelong music education.”

The book includes ten original studies of musical engagement by children and adults of all ages, including both native born citizens and immigrants, in settings both virtual and in-person such as choral and instrumental ensembles, music classes, and community groups.

According to Lehmberg, “The book is intended for scholars and professionals in school and community music-related fields, as well as readers interested in general education, social psychology, lifelong learning, and aging studies. We hope it will be a valuable supplement for graduate courses in contemporary music education, lifelong learning in music, or music education research methods.”

Lehmberg and Fung also co-authored "Music for Life: Music Participation and Quality of Life of Senior Citizens," which was published in 2016 by Oxford University Press.
