Student Affairs and Campus Life has announced the appointment of Jeff Smith as the new executive director of Campus Recreation and Wellbeing, effective June 23.

Smith has more than 20 years of dedicated service to UMass Amherst, having joined UMass Athletics in 2001. Most recently, he served as deputy athletic director for external operations, where he earned a strong reputation for collaborative leadership and a commitment to student wellbeing, inclusion and access to recreation.

Throughout his tenure in Athletics, Smith has led strategic initiatives in communications, marketing, fan engagement and wellness, with a focus on enhancing the student experience and student-athlete development, and has worked closely with colleagues across Student Affairs, academic departments and other campus units to cultivate a healthy and connected campus environment.

Smith’s previous roles in Athletics include senior associate athletic director for internal operations and sport program administrator for multiple varsity teams. With a professional background in athletic training and sports medicine at UMass Amherst and peer institutions, he also brings valuable insight into the creation of inclusive, accessible spaces where all students feel a sense of belonging.
