IT Announces Remote Access Security Changes Starting Jan. 10

On Jan. 10, UMass Amherst Information Technology will implement additional security controls that will impact how to remotely access university computers and servers. Changes to how users access Secure Shell Protocol (SSH/SCP) will be made to reduce risks to university computers and data by further limiting remote access from the Internet. Users will be required to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection to access Secure Shell Protocol (SSH/SCP) from off-campus.
If a service utilized by university community members requires an exception to allow users to access SSH/SCP from off-campus without a VPN connection, please submit an exception request no later than Tuesday, Jan. 2. UMass IT’s Information Security team will work to assess the requests and risks to university computers and data.
