The training will follow the curriculum developed by the National Research Mentoring Network. The efficacy of this program for mentors and their mentees is supported by both qualitative and quantitative data (see more at CIMERproject.org).

The training focuses on a series of items for discussion, such as interesting case studies and sample compacts between mentors and mentees. In small groups, participants discuss these materials with the help of trained facilitators. The material generates very thoughtful discussions and participants leave with plenty of good ideas and a more nuanced understanding of the mentoring relationship. The topics include aligning expectations with mentees, maintaining effective communication, addressing equity and inclusion, fostering independence and promoting well-being. Nearly 250 UMass faculty have taken the training and even experienced mentors report that they find it to be beneficial.
